Computer component industry has been evolving over the years for faster bigger and more efficient products to satisfy the hunger of the high end gamers and high performance server manufacturers. The latest news is that SK Hynix the korean chip manufacturers announced that it has developed the industry's most advancded DDR4 module with 128GB of capacity.Until now 64GB DDR3 modules were the highest available but with this latest development we see the beginning of the new era of DDR4 RAM modules.
The new DDR4 modules are based on Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology and will significantly improve speeds and efficiency. TSV also allows the dynamic random access memory – popularly known as DRAM – to be connected with higher electrical efficiencies. The SK Hynix has used 20nm 8Gb chips to double the capacity on a single module which runs at 2133Mbps .As a result 128GB DDR4 module can reach speeds of 2,133 megabits per second as compared to DDR3′s 1,333 Mbps. The module can handle 17GB of data per second and only requires 1.2V (DDR3 typically requires 1.5V).
The Mass production of the new modules along with a 64GB version (for the desktops) is set to begin in the first half of 2015,and we expect a warm welcome from the server manufacturers and data centers where squeezing more resources in to the same space is the ultimate goal.
For the home desktop users ,well it is not so far that you can update to DDR4 ram because intel has already announced the X99 motherboards which can support DDR4 modules .
