Here are the key features that Windows Phone 8.1 adds to the OS:
Here are the key features that Windows Phone 8.1 adds to the OS:
Cortana: Apple has Siri and Google has Google Now, which can act as a virtual assistant. Cortana is Microsoft's virtual assistant that will help Windows Phone users. Cortana is a mix of Siri and Google Now. Users will be able to talk to Cortana and ask it to set alarms etc just the way they can do on iPhone with Siri.
At the same time, Cortana will also read emails (with permission) and collect information about how a person is using the phone. After getting the required information, Cortana will use it to give you reminders, notifications and messages. For example, it will be able to find from a user's emails that he has a flight to catch and track information related to that flight automatically. This is similar to Google Now.
While Cortana looks good on paper, a lot will depend on how well it recognizes the voice, especially in countries like India where pronunciation is different, and how well it makes user of the data it will collect on a user.
Unlike Siri and Google Now, Cortana will be accessible by third-party apps like Facebook and Hulu. Cortana is powered by Bing search engine. It will be initially available only in the US.
Fun fact: The name comes from Microsoft's Halo games, where Cortana is a virtual assistant helping the game protagonist defeat the bad guys.
Action centre: Action centre is Microsoft's notification system for Windows Phone. And it is fairly basic and similar to the notification centres in iOS and Android. It will have four buttons - Wi-Fi, Bluetooh, Airplane mode and internet sharing - for quick actions and will show notification from various apps. It will also show battery and network information.
Home screen improvements: With Windows Phone now powering big-screen phones like Lumia 1320, Microsoft is added a new option for home screen management - high density. This will allow users to put more tiles on the home screen.
With Windows Phone 8.1, users will also be able to put a wallpaper - or rather background wallpaper - of their choice. If a wallpaper has been set, the tiles will be transparent.
Swype-like keyboard: The keyboard in Windows Phone 8.1 supports "glide typing", a method made popular by Swype app on Android. Instead of tapping on alphabets, in this mode users can glide their finger on the screen from one alphabet to next to type a word.
Better app store: Microsoft has said that with Windows Phone 8.1 it is reorganizing and introducing new interface in the app store. This means better apps will get better visibility now.
— Windows Phone 8.1 will add several security-related features for enterprise users. Yes, this includes support for VPN.
— Windows Phone 8.1 will come with Internet Explorer 11.
— Windows Phone 8.1 features more comprehensive integration with Skype.
While the list of new features in Windows Phone 8.1 is impressive, in reality Microsoft is just playing catch up with Apple and Google. Both iOS and Android already offer almost all features that Windows Phone 8.1 will bring to Windows Phone users.
However, Microsoft is hoping that with feature parity achieved, the company will be able to woo consumers on the basis of Windows Phone's fast and fluid user interface, which has won almost universal praise.
