Recently we reported about the leaked specs sheet of the Samsung's upcoming flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone which revealed the complete details of its triple camera module (here). Now today the LinkedIn profile of a former Samsung employee has revealed that the company has began developing its second-generation NPU design back in December of 2017 .
According to the employee Samsung has started working for a top level modelling NPU in SystemC and the new design architecture will improve the performance and power optimization. The second-generation NPU version is also expected to perform activation function, pooling, padding, multiplication and accumulation. Unfortunately the employee has left the project halfway, so very little information about the solution is provided.
While considering the fact that the Samsung has begun the work of the second-generation NPU almost a year ago, the new design will presumably be ready in time for the arrival of the Galaxy S10 and will probably be part of the upcoming Exynos 9820 chipset. Recently Huawei has launched the Kirin 980 that features two dedicated NPU which will improve its AI performance and the chipset is expected to arrive in the upcoming Mate 20 series smartphone.
